Acid Reflux After 45: The Estrogen Connection
Reflux worsening in your mid-40s isn't a coincidence. Shifting estrogen affects the lower esophageal sphincter — the valve that keeps stomach acid where it belongs — and slows gut motility. The result: more heartburn, more often, from foods that used to be fine.
The biggest triggers
- Late, heavy dinners (finish eating 3 hours before bed)
- Alcohol — especially wine
- Coffee on an empty stomach
- Tomato, citrus, chocolate, mint
- Tight waistbands and lying flat
What actually helps
- Sleep on a wedge pillow or elevate the head of the bed 6 inches
- Smaller, more frequent meals with protein at each
- Walk 10 minutes after dinner
- Lose even 5–10% of body weight if applicable
- Talk to your doctor about H2 blockers before reaching for long-term PPIs
When to see a doctor
Reflux more than twice a week, trouble swallowing, or unexplained weight loss warrant an endoscopy. Don't wait it out.
